Riffs in English

Why it's here

It was a place to post the latest chapters of The Science of Magic, which was called "The (Continuing) Adventures Of Herbert and Noderick". The title was changed for obvious reasons.

I was geographically separated from my current significant other, and she professed an interest in the story. I figured it would be easy to post it on the internet, and so it was. A couple of <pre> tags and I was on my way. After all, this was for she and me to read, I didn't need any flaming skulls, or navigation bars. Heck, I didn't even use a background.

It started to get to me, the more I looked at it, the more it looked like an enormous Email. Coincidently, I tripped over a copy of a word processing program, and when I printed the pages, the fonts and colors were different.

I played, at first. Just a few <p> tags and it was looking better. But what if I could make it look like a book? And why in the name of SGML, couldn't I make the first line indent? One thing I discovered, while researching HTML, etc. is that I had a passion for clean HTML. I personally believe it's a sin to pack a web page inside 10 or 15 nested tables, or force visitors to load 30MB flash animations to visit. I will refer you to webpagesthatsuck.com for further discourse on that.

My philosophy on this, is one I frequently apply to life: "It's easier to build a brick airplane, than to find engines big enough to get it off the ground"

The result is here, it was written by hand (by typing in text) and I'm still not done with it.

The Emporer of TVLand, and Alpha Bozos, are two of a series of articles I wrote for a regional magazine. I managed to alienate the agent and the publisher with a single letter, so these two were never published.

Toddle is about a real child, and is not really fiction. I have no idea where it's going, but as I write this, Austin is only two.

Avoiding Laundry was supposed to be the name of this site, but it isn't. I'm not sure why.

The Statue Of Liberty, Reloaded is a bit of commentary I sent to some freinds, after the patriot act was passed. If you take issue with the sentiment, please visit the Complaint Department..

The Quotes are just for me, because I really like them.

The Anti-virus page, is also a matter of convenience, but you're welcome to use it if you need it.

Aaanny Waaay...

It's here because it's here. Because I don't want to look for a new agent. It's here because I'm still Avoiding Laundry.
